What is a phage?
Phages are natural predators of bacteria. Each type of bacteria has many phages that prey on them. Though phages are extremely small, they are the most abundant form of life. There is approximately 1 trillion phages for every grain of sand on the Earth.
Is BroodSafe™ toxic to people/pets/insects?
The phages in BroodSafe™ are very specific and can only infect and kill Paenibacillus larvae bacterial cells, meaning that it is safe for people, pets, bees, and any other living organism. While the phages are safe, humans should not consume BroodSafe™.
Can BroodSafe™ be used during the honey flow?
BroodSafe™ can be applied at any time of the year, including during honey flow. BroodSafe™ does not leave a harmful residue like traditional antibiotics.
Is the stability of BroodSafe™ dependent on temperature or humidity? What are ideal storage conditions for unused powder?
BroodSafe™ remains the most stable when it is in its original powder form. We recommend storing the powder in its original packaging and in a cool, dry place. Moisture will activate the phages, decreasing their stability over time. Prolonged or high heat exposure will also decrease their shelf life.
How long will BroodSafe™ be stable in the hive as a powder?
BroodSafe™ dusted according to the instructions on the label will become active upon ingestion and remain stable for several days after being consumed.
How long will BroodSafe™ be stable in syrup?
BroodSafe™ is best when used directly after mixing with a liquid. We do NOT recommend storing BroodSafe™ in liquid. After mixing with a liquid feed we recommend using the entirety of the mixture as soon as possible. BroodSafe™ added to liquid will activate the phages and we recommend getting the mixture to your hives within a week. We highly recommend waiting until your syrup has cooled to 95 degrees Fahrenheit or below before adding BroodSafe™.
How does the sun effect BroodSafe™?
BroodSafe™ comes in packaging designed to prevent damage by UV radiation. We recommend avoiding long exposure to direct sunlight and high temperatures. Use opaque/UV-protected containers whenever possible.
What is the difference between Commercial Concentrate and Standard BroodSafe™?
Our standard BroodSafe™ concentration comes in a pre-mixed, easy-to-use formulation that is ready for dusting into hives or mixing into hive feeders. For commercial operations we offer a 10x concentration that facilitates adding BroodSafe™ to large amounts of syrup or powdered sugar.
